Stunning 18-hole championship course regularly voted Malaysia's best
A much-heralded championship course that has played host to numerous events on the European and Asian Tour, the West Course is one of two exquisite courses at Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club, located near the heart of the city. Set amidst attractive hills and abandoned rock quarries, it picked up even more awards after a 2018 upgrade by Ted Parslow, with the pristine condition of the course and the thrilling challenges on offer more than justifying its lofty status.
The longer and more challenging of the two courses at Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club, the West Course is a delight from start to finish, with the bumpy, bunker-pocked fairway of the first giving a fair indication of the challenges ahead. The second plays into a kidney-shaped green sat right on the water, but you've got to go long off the tee to find the right side of the split fairway if you want a clear route in.
There's more sand in the landing zone of the 3rd and in front of the 4th green, a beautiful short par-3 with a trio of deep bunkers just short of the putting surface, while the par-5 5th requires a challenging approach over water to a peninsula green, with little margin for error. The front nine ends with a long ar-4 featuring water on both sides and a narrow gap between another array of bunkers just short of the green.
On the back nine, it's the closing stretch that stands out, with the par-4 14th featuring a narrowing fairway that snakes around a lake and the 15th a short par-3 with a quartet of bunkers awaiting those who avoid the same lake.
There's more water up the left side of the 16th, the optimal play off the tee requiring you to carry as much of the lake as possible to leave you a short iron into a green that sits right on the water, while the 17th fairway is bisected by a creek, offering up the choice between an ambitious drive to the left or an awkward approach from the right.
The final hole is a long, straight par-5 that's utterly besieged by bunkers - more than 10, by our count. The fairway snakes and narrows between the sand traps, with one bunker sneakily hidden right in the centre of the landing zone for your second shot. A conservative approach is most likely to pay dividends.
The clubhouse at Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club features all the five-star amenities you would expect from a course of this calibre, and the Golfers' Terrace makes for a great place to enjoy a beer and reminisce on what will no doubt be one of those rounds of golf that will live long in the memory.
