About
Beautiful and challenging former host of the Malaysian Open
Located in the cooler climate of the foothills of the impressive Bukit Takun limestone hill, just 45 minutes from Kuala Lumpur, Templer Park Country Club is a championship golf course designed by legendary Japanese professional golfer Jumbo Ozaki and renowned golf course architect Kentaro Sato. Three-time host of the Malaysian Open, the course is set amidst the beauty of Templer Park Forest Reserve, with breathtaking views of the craggy limestone outcrops and the forest-covered hills on offer.
The relatively flat front nine is the easier half of the course, although with water in play on five of the opening nine holes it's still tough to score well. Your tee shot into the green of the par-3 2nd must clear a lake and avoid the bunkers that surround the green, while the 4th requires a drive over water and an approach over a pair of bunkers to find a green backed by more sand.
The 8th is a very pretty par-3 with water from tee to green, and at 196 yards it's no walk in the park finding the narrow green, while the 9th requires a 200-yard carry off the tee to set up your approach to a green with only a narrow route through the bunkers to safety.
The back nine is hillier, and rated as harder overall. The 12th is a memorable doglegging par-5 with a lake just short of the green; if you can cut enough of the corner off the tee you might bring the green within range of your second shot, but falling short is a disaster so most of us should be laying up.
The 15th is a genuine par-5 that doglegs to the left, a pair of menacing bunkers either side of the green waiting to ensnare anything off line, while the narrow green at the par-3 16th presents a small target between two more massive sand traps.
Particularly memorable is the 18th, a 415-yard par-4 that offers two routes to the green off the tee. Taking the direct route requires an accurate drive that carries at least 210 yards, with the benefit that it takes the huge bunker in front of the green out of play; the longer route makes for an easier tee shot but a very demanding approach.
In summary, Templer Park Country Club is an excellent course packed full of interesting challenges, not least the numerous bunkers and the thick rough which can cost you many shots if you venture offline. Even if you manage to reach the massive greens in regulation, you can often be faced with long putts across the fast and undulating putting surface. Whatever your score, we can guarantee a great day out at this beautiful course.
Reviews
Good arrangement, we started to play from No14 hole due to congestion.
Nice view of huge rock and nice maintenance. It is exciting to challenge to drive over water hazards!Very nice course with fairway and green in good condition.
Very nice course with fairway and green in good condition. Caddies are very intelligent and very sweet. It would have been safer if they had done some renovation of the changing room and the bathroom. Beware of monkeys as they might be a nuisance, and they're coming to your cart looking for food. Put your wallets and phones away while you play to stop losing or damaging them.Course Info
