Staffield Country Resort
About
A long-time favourite that still well worth playing
Although its award-winning days are long in the past, having been usurped by the slew of excellent courses that have sprung up in Kuala Lumpur over the last 20 years, Staffield Country Resort remains an excellent 27-hole layout that deserves a seat at the top table of Kuala Lumpur golf courses. Spread over 335 serene acres of rolling hills and meadows and home to 81 bunkers and seven lakes, the course is made up of three nine-hole loops regarded as amongst the toughest in the region.
It doesn't take long to understand why the course was voted 3rd Best Golf Course in Malaysia back in 2003, the opening hole of the Western Nine a long par-5 with a massive bunker up the right hand side. The 4th requires a nervy drive over water to a narrow fairway, and that's followed up by a very long genuine par 5 where you've no hope of getting there in two.
The Southern Nine also starts with a long par 5, this time weaving left then right en route to a green abutting a small lake; similarly, the putting surface at the par-4 16th backs onto a lake, while the par-3 17th features water from tee to green.
There's no let up on the Northern Nine, another massive bunker bordering the 19th green, and a demanding approach over water required at the 20th. The 23rd is a great par-4 with a fairway split by a huge sand trap, offering two routes to the green. The left route is extremely narrow off the tee, but takes the greenside bunkers out of play; the right route is safer off the tee but a nightmare on approach.
The English Tudor-style clubhouse at Staffield features everything you might expect, including well-appointed locker rooms, a pro-shop, a decent restaurant and a golfers' terrace. There's also a range of recreational activities available, including tennis, squash, swimming, and fitness.
Overall, the 27 holes at Staffield Country Resort have much to recommend them, making a round here an excellent choice for those looking for a laid back afternoon on their next Kuala Lumpur golf holiday.
