About
One of the very best - and toughest - courses in Malaysia
The three-time winner of the title of Best Course in Malaysia at the Asian Golf Awards and seven-time host of the Malaysian Open, the Palm Course at Saujana Golf & Country Club is a world-class championship golf course widely regarded as the toughest in the country, mainly thanks its tight fairways and lightning fast greens. A beautifully manicured course kept in championship condition all year round, it's an absolute must-play for anyone looking to enjoy the very best that golf in Malaysia has to offer.
Set on the rolling hills of a former oil palm estate, this 7,024 yard course demands all-round golf skills to master, its sloped, lightning-fast greens, narrow tree-lined fairways and dramatic elevation changes providing a genuine test.
The wide fairway of the first gives little hint of this, although twin bunkers just short of the green mean you have to be accurate on approach. The second is an achingly beautiful par 3 that plays over a gorge to a green with steep runoffs and a trio of bunkers surrounding it.
A stream running across the 6th fairway means careful game management is required at the 610-yard par-5 3rd, and the par-4 that follows dog-legs around a lake and requires a tricky-to-judge approach.
The front nine ends with a run of very tough holes, the 6th a right-angle dogleg, the 7th a par-4 that takes a narrow, winding path through the trees, and the 8th a long par-5 featuring nine bunkers, including an absolutely massive one just to the right of where the pin is often placed. If that wasn't enough, the 9th, rated the hardest hole, is a 493-yard par-4 whose green is similarly besieged by sand traps.
The back nine is, relatively speaking, more easygoing, but the emphasis should be on 'relatively'. Your drive at the par-4 11th must thread through a narrow channel between the trees, and the substantial lake in front of the 13th green means even the easiest hole on the course is far from a gimme.
The 15th is much harder, a 433-yard par-4 where a lake in front of the green runs right up to the putting surface, leaving very little margin for error on what is likely to be a fairly long approach shot. The narrow fairway at the 17th doglegs around a lake, tempting you to try to cut the corner, but at a relatively tame 373 yards it's not worth it for most of us.
The last is a 569-yard par-5 where your tee shot must find the narrow gap between twin bunkers. A bunker dead centre of the fairway, just short of the green dares you to go for the green in two, but unless you are very long off the tee, not for the first time you're better off taking your medicine and laying up.
Away from the course itself, the facilities are world class, as you would expect from a course of this calibre, with pro shop, driving range, golfers terrace. There's even an on-site resort with views over the twin courses at Saujana Golf & Country Club for those looking to stay overnight.
