About
A stunning championship course with real bite
While the Bunga Raya Course at Saujana Golf & Country Club has to live in the shadow of its more illustrious sister course, it's an excellent 18-hole championship golf course in its own right, and arguably the more enjoyable layout. Set on the site of a former palm oil plantation and surrounded by jungle vegetation, it's a tight, undulating course that's earned the nickname "Crocodile" due to its powerful bite.
The course is known for its fast and sloping greens with steep runoffs, and it's not unknown for an overcooked putt to end up some way off the green, but getting to the putting surfaces is as much of a challenge as getting down in two will prove to be.
The opener is a long par-5 with a lake and a substantial bunker just in front of the green, and this early in the round is not the time for heroics, so lay up and look to two-putt for par. The toughest hole is the 3rd, a 447-yard par-4 with a lake to the right and a trio of bunkers protecting the green, and it's followed by another very tough par-4 requiring a tough approach over a lake.
There's some light relief on offer at the stroke index 17 par-3 6th, a small bunker in front the only real threat, while the 9th is another long par-4 whose fairway snakes between numerous bunkers that it's imperative to avoid if you want to end the front nine without a blemish.
The back nine gets off to a tough start with the 606-yard par-5 10th with a fairway split by rough and bunkers into three sections that ensure you must choose the correct club on your first two shots to avoid finding trouble. The 14th is another great par 5 that arcs through a narrow channel of trees, and that's followed by a pretty par-3 with bunkers front and back.
The last two holes are especially good. The par-3 17th plays into a beautiful peninsula green with bunkers everywhere water is not, while the last is another of those tough par 4s, this one featuring water running all the way up the right of the narrowing fairway and very little margin for error.
Notable holes include the challenging 3rd, with a guarded green and big undulations, and the tricky par-5 8th, with a narrow green protected by hazards.
Away from the course itself, the facilities are world class, as you would expect from a course of this calibre, with pro shop, driving range, golfers terrace. There's even an on-site resort with views over the twin courses at Saujana Golf & Country Club for those looking to stay overnight.
Reviews
Difficult but fair course
Course in reasonable condition. Some greens better than others. From what we could see of the Palms course, it appeared to be in better condition. Rolling fairways and undulating greens provide some challenges. Also lots of water! Our female caddie was very good at reading the greens but gave very little advice on how to play the fairways. 18 holes in 4hrs 30 mins was a reasonable pace of play. Being a 2 ball we did have to wait for the 3 ball in front on occasions. Clubhouse facilities were very good and the cafe area had a good choice of food. Well stocked pro shop. If we played here again, we would like to try the Palms course.Very challenging course
Quite challenging course. A 36 hole layout and the green is super quick on the Palm Course. Food is a really nice thing.Course Info
