Glenmarie Golf & Country Club
About
Two well-maintained top-class courses from Max Wexler
Located on the rolling hills of a former rubber estate just 30 minutes from the Kuala Lumpur airport, Glenmarie Golf and Country Club is home to two top-class golf courses designed by Max Wexler. Attractive landscaping and good conditioning help ensure the course retains its position amongst Malaysia's best, with the main challenge coming from the undulating terrain and occasionally narrow fairways.
The Garden Course is enjoys a rich variety of flora and fauna, including palms and flowering shrubs, as well as a large lake that is home to migrating and local birds. Much improved after a 2010 renovation, the Garden Course now features more challenging holes with deep and abundant greenside bunkers.
The Garden Course gets off to a tough start, with water starting on the left side before cutting across the fairway to offer a threat on the right on the second half of the hole, while the 2nd is a memorable par-5 requiring a drive over water and another water carry on approach into a green guarded by three substantial bunkers.
Unless you are particularly wild off the tee, water doesn't really come into play over the rest of round, abundant bunkering and the occasional blind approach presenting the major challenges, although the par-5 12th does border the same lake that causes issues at the 2nd.
The Valley Course is narrower thanks to the hundreds of pine trees lining the fairways, and consequently harder. Threading your way between the trees and bunkers at the par-4 2nd requires a deft touch, while the par-5 5th features a fairway split in two by a creek and an island green guarded by four large bunkers.
There's more water to contend with off the tee of the 7th and on approach to the 8th green, where a lake intrudes into the fairway just short of the green making a controlled draw the optimal play. After the 10th, a par-4 requiring two water carries, there's a run of water-free holes where the undulating terrain and narrow fairways means careful game management is the name of the game, particularly at the bunker heavy 11th and 12th.
The closing trio of holes reintroduce the lakes to good effect, with a long water carry required on approach to the 16th as well from the tee at the short par-3 17th and the short par-4 18th, where a cluster of bunkers cutting into the fairway mean it's no mean feat to find a safe spot with your driver.
Aside from golf, Glenmarie offers various sports and recreational activities, such as an Olympic-sized swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, a fitness center, and a children's area. The facilities, including locker rooms, sauna, and an on-site golf academy, are roundly excellent although the service is a little indifferent and the caddies not quite on a par with what you would expect.
Nonetheless, a stop at Glenmarie Golf & Country Club offers a great experience for golfers on a golf holiday in Kuala Lumpur.
Reviews
Glenmarie is one of a kind in KL
Glenmarie staff where very friendly, both in pro shop and in administration. Nice dressing room and nice but expensive to eat and drink. Our caddie was not as good as at Sungai and this caddie was not pleased over his tip. WE gave him more then he deserved - as we see it. And more then practice in KL, as we understand. But the course was excellent. We played the Valley, but it was to difficult for us. Maybe the staff could advise us to the more flat and maybe more easy garden course. We are not single hcp and we thought the Valley was to difficult for us.. But staf and surroundings was nice.,Great course in KL
We really enjoyed our playing of the Glenmarie course at KL. We played the valley course. Challenging but enjoyable. Would definitely recommend it.Magnificent landscape
The Valley course is great with a good landscape and was in proper condition. 1 or 2 more half way houses would be great to get drinks. The caddy was awful without any knowledge of the game and without proper assistance. Neither English language skills did exist. But at the end due to a moderate pricing this was value for money.Course Info
