Danau Golf Club
About
Affordable but very tough countryside courses with tricky greens
Originally opened in 2005 but much improved following an extensive 2011 renovation, Danau Golf Club is a very challenging 18-hole countryside course located just a short distance from the Bangi exit on the North-South Highway. While the fairways are cow grass, making it harder to make good contact compared to other courses in the area, the Bermuda Tifdwarf greens run very fast, which together with the subtly undulating surfaces make putting a real challenge.
Undulating, tree-lined fairways, several large water hazards on the back nine and well-protected greens throughout mean the challenges aren't confined to the greens, although the wild undulations of the green at the 2nd, an uphill par-4 that clocks in at just 310 yards, might suggest otherwise.
Three greenside bunkers are the main danger at the attractive par-3 3rd, which plays from an elevated tee box offering great views, while a further pair of sand traps just short of the green put paid to reaching the putting surface in two at the 4th, a monster of a doglegging par-5 that backs onto water.
The back nine is harder, starting with a right-angled dogleg par-4 which is followed by the first forced water carry, on approach at the 11th. The 13th is a memorable par-3 that plays from an island tee box to a green protected front and back by sand, while bunkers are again the main danger on your approach at the 15th, another long doglegging par 4.
The round ends with a short par-4, but even though you'll likely have a wedge in hand on approach, four large bunkers and a three-tiered green mean it's a challenge to end your round with par no matter how good your drive. It's for this reason that we mainly recommend Danau Golf Club for lower handicappers, as less experienced golfers may struggle.
Away from the course itself, the facilities include a driving range, clubhouse, and locker rooms suitable for a public university. Caddies are not available. Overall, if you're looking for an extreme challenge, a round at Danau Golf Club definitely fits the bill.
